Planning My Very Own Home Quilting Space

Filed under: Uncategorized — kimhanson @ 2:26 am

Despite the fact that I had access to the developed basement in our home, I decided I could no longer work in my basement quilting studio. No matter what I did, there was NEVER enough light down there! Several smallish windows and tons of lamps did not really help – it always felt so dark and a little foreboding when I was working. If not the largest accessible space in our home, where, then could I set up shop? I needed a more cozy, natural light-filled workspace big enough to accommodate my sewing, quilting and writing equipment. Where, oh where, would that be?

Lying in bed at night, I would close my eyes and visualize my sewing equipment in different locations throughout the house. More times than I can count, I tried to talk myself out of moving, as my husband calls, “my operation”, up from the basement to the main level – just because I knew how much work it would entail. No matter what I did, though, the basement was just not suitable. I really needed to figure out a better solution.

So, after many months of deliberation, I finally decided that the under utilized living room and dining room space of our home could be reconfigured – to my benefit! We had family dinners each Sunday in the dining room, but the living room was not used very often at all. I needed help from my husband and my adult son, but the three of us succeeded in hauling “my operation” up from the basement to the main floor and I could not be happier with the move. Now, working in my home studio is a pleasure….tons of much-needed natural sunlight, glimpses of the neighborhood squirrels playing in my backyard and hardwood floors that, unlike carpet, don’t cling to each bit of scrap fabric, have made all the difference in the World.

Here is how I did it…..

Step #1 Move the sofa, coffee table and end tables from the living room to the basement.
Step #2 Move the dining room table, chairs and armoire from the dining room to the living room. The living room love seat was repositioned in front of the window. I purchased a small, black pedestal style end table from HomeSense and two lamps, moved a few pictures around and the room became pretty and functional.
Step #3 Using graph paper, I drew a room plan for converting the dining room to a home office quilting studio. First, the new space was measured (13.4′x11.8′) and then three separate stations were configured into that space. Station A – cutting table; Station B – sewing/embroidery machines; Station C – computer/printer; Station D – fabric and more storage. Since the space in the dining room was limited, I combined Station A and B together.

Station A – The cutting table that I use is an old drafting table that my Dad used in his business eons ago. I sanded, primed and painted it black prior to moving it upstairs from the basement. It’s a fairly large surface (5′x3.2′) so it accommodates two fabric cutting mats and both of my Brother sewing and embroidery machines. A bar stool purchased from HomeSense is just the right height for the drafting table — I can see outside to the backyard when I’m working at my sewing machines. At night, I turn on both lamps and my workspace is comfortable, cozy and well-lit. On either side of the drafting table, there is some fabric storage – IKEA style wire baskets that are very versatile. On the left hand side, I have all my sewing accessories contained in old Starbucks tea tins – fabric cutter, scissors, pinking shears, marking pencils, etc. which are easily accessed when the need arises. On the floor beneath the drafting table, there is a thread rack which holds colourful machine embroidery threads. Since I am a quilt designer and a writer, I need to retain some files and a wicker basket file box sits under the drafting table with all my files in one handy spot.

Surprisingly, my aged Home Depot computer table works well in the new space and holds both my laptop computer and printer easily on its surface. The table faces towards the living room window allowing me to keep tabs on what’s happening outside. Tucked into a plastic three drawer cart on wheels beside the computer table, is paper and envelopes, camera, chargers, printer ink – all very easily accessible. Since I love Mary Engelbreit and Helen Downing Hunter, their work covers the walls.

Station C is more storage. I was fortunate to find three coordinating inexpensive glass door cabinets at HomeSense which fit the alcove in the new workspace perfectly! (I just love HomeSense!) More fabric, bobbins, threads, cording, ribbons, straping, pattern books, etc. are in the cabinets. Even with the glass doors, the items seem to be hidden from view. The ironing board conveniently folds up and fits neatly beside the cabinets.

Adding a living green plant and design board gave my new workspace some much-needed feng shui.

Since my new workspace was very open there was no door to close and leave the mess behind. Now, when someone appears at my front door, they are easily able to see into my new workspace, and it was obvious I needed a way to discreetly hide my “creativity”. I found the solution at Pier One…a vintage room divider that I can easily pull across in front of my computer table to camouflage what lurks beyond. .

For a few hundred dollars, an under utilized living room and some sweat equity, I now am so fortunate to have a workspace that I love.

Beautiful Baby Girl

Filed under: Uncategorized — kimhanson @ 7:02 pm

Childhood is fleeting – when the special moments come along in a child’s life, it’s so lovely to be able to stop and fully appreciate how wondrous they can be. My beautiful baby granddaughter, Harlow, is a huge joy in my life. Sometimes, I just want to fold her up and keep her in my pocket! She is life and sweetness and innocence all rolled up into one tiny package. I’m privileged to have her and her sweet family living nearby and I’m able to watch over her at least one day a week. Harlow and I so love going to the zoo – in fact, it’s one of our special, favorite places. Harlow is fond of butterflies and tigers mostly – me the red pandas. In fact, I have gone to the zoo JUST to see the red pandas!

It’s so very special to be able to sew and quilt for family members, especially for children. I found this vintage fabric on ebay several years ago and now I know why I was so compelled to purchase it! It was meant to be for Harlow…the fabric so reminds me of her. I’ve been working on a crib quilt for her, but since it’s taking so long, I think the quilt will have to be made a little bigger, to fit a single bed instead. For those of you who know me – the vintage fabric just has to be paired with flannels!

I have made a pillow and quilt for her crib. The quilt was made a long time ago, but just seemed to fit well in her room here at our house. Much of the fabric is vintage feedsack; combined with vintage chenilles and some newer fabric lines.

Finding time to live our lives the way we want to is a challenge. Let’s face it – there are so many distractions wherever we look and noise, confusion and chatter surrounds us each and every day. I’ve found such a benefit from slowing down my pace (even just a bit) and cherishing the quiet time and stillness. It’s such a lovely way to find creativity.

Unseasonable Weather

Filed under: Uncategorized — kimhanson @ 4:52 pm

September has really got to be the best time of the year, don’t you think? The snow isn’t here yet (thank goodness!) and the summer isn’t completely gone, but it’s lingering just long enough to give us one last glimpse of it’s glory and splendour. This past weekend was perfection…so beautiful and sunny and everything is turning golden. I tried to get some work done on my quilting design and was somewhat successful, but it was really hard to be inside, when the weather is so lovely outside.

The apple tree has only a few apples remaining on its branches; most of them have been picked or fallen off.

One sweet little sparrow likes to sun himself in the lilac tree.

There is no one out here except me.

Oh, and Joey the squirrel – munching on one of my apples!

I know the summer is fleeting and it will be leaving us soon. The thought of winter and snow and ice is just too hard to bear at this moment. But, when winter comes, at least I’ll get some work done!

Quilting away from Home

Filed under: Uncategorized — kimhanson @ 2:55 am

Summer is ending; no matter how hard we try to hold on to it, it's fleeting and will soon be gone for this year. Summer was late coming to Alberta - it was welcomed with open arms, but now is definitely leaving all too soon. There are some leaves changing color from green to yellow, and the fall air has a distinctly different "feel" to it. September is often the most beautiful month of the year, love how the day can be so hot and the evenings can be so cool; nice for sleeping.

I have been hauling out all my sewing equipment - machines, thread, fabric, quilting rulers, and such to the condo so I could still work on my craft away from home. Sewing machines are heavy and hauling them back and forth has been a bit of a challenge, but I've decided so well worth it. Sewing and quilting in the exquisite Columbia Valley in B.C. is like a vacation from both work and home - only I'm still working! Having your cake and eating it too, I think.

Though there is plenty of work for me to do while I’m away from home, I like to take the time to walk in the mornings to some familiar places around the Lake. The little red and white church is my favorite. Although I’ve never been inside the wee church, it’s existence fascinates me and I’ve admired it’s strength and standing in the community for 25 years or so now. Sitting on the bench in the side yard with the sun streaming down on my face is as close to heaven as it gets. There is no sound, except maybe for the occasional boat cruising by. On weekdays, the Valley is so quiet; serene and lovely. There is true peace and healing being in such a quiet little community – it’s so very lovely.

All the best, Kim

Hey Jack!

Filed under: Uncategorized — kimhanson @ 12:40 am

This is Jack – my seven-year old nephew.

He is a sweet cutie-pie of a boy who belongs to my younger brother. Jack loves fast cars, playing lacrosse, his family (Mom, Dad, sister Jenny and brother Jeff) and the colors, orange and red.

When Jack visits my home, he immediately runs upstairs and goes into my grandson, Jacob’s, bedroom to play. On one visit to my house, he became very interested in a pillow on Jacob’s bed.

Jack said to me, “Kim, can you make me a pillow like Jacob’s?” (He doesn’t insert “Auntie” before my name!)

It took me a little awhile, but I finished Jack’s “crazy” pillow just after his 7th birthday.

After he got his new pillow – he wanted to take it camping, but my brother wouldn’t let him. But with this pillow, there is no worry about dirt and grime! The pillow cover comes off and can be washed and dried many, many times.

Even though Jack just turned 7 years old in early July – he likes to tell people that he’s 7 1/2! Such a cute, funny litte guy.

I will be offering my crazy pillow pattern for free in the next few days. The pattern can be easily adapted for any child (or adult or pet for that matter!) with any interests. It is a quick, simple and fun project – so please stay tuned and watch for my next posting.

…Love Kim

Too much quilting?

C.A.T. – A Different Kind of “Animal”

I was feeling oh-so desperate when I went online seeking a therapeutic yoga instructor. Lower back pain and stiff shoulders were the by-product of daily work slouching in front of either my computer or my sewing machine. My sitting posture was less than perfect, and began to exact a nasty toll on my body. I often found myself scrunching and hunching up my poor overworked shoulders, for no reason at all. It was like I needed my shoulders in order to breathe!

Luck and some good karma is how I found Sherryn Rault – a yoga instructor with a web presence. As someone who already loved and practised yoga, I knew yoga and not a chiropractor was the key for me to being pain-free. So armed with that belief, I registered in Sherryn’s C.A.T. – critical alignment therapy yoga class. I admit that I love heart-pumping, vigorous exercise – nothing beats a “power hour” of Ashtanga yoga! Sherryn’s classes were vastly different. It took time to gear down and grasp Sherryn’s techniques and the messages in her instruction. Laying on my mat with a yoga strap at my bra line and a rolled-up pad stuck in my lumbar curve was not my idea of “strengthening my core”. Yee-ouch!

Surprisingly, my body felt better immediately. C.A.T. is purposeful – constructive yoga therapy that eases the pain in my body and is now an integral part of my healthy body maintenance routine. Discovering Sherryn’s form of yoga therapy was like finding money in the pocket of an old jacket – a delightful surprise.
